O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed by her vocal performance. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges, however she suffered significant losses during the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and second-bottom two places, respectively. The judges were stunned by the results and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performances were so good that she didn't even make it to the third place again. After two more breathtaking performances on September 7, 2005, the day that O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol straight away.
